  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese


  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, brown ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  4. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, sugar, salt, basil, and black pepper to the skillet. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and Parmesan cheese.
  6. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  7. Layer 4 lasagna noodles, followed by 1/3 of the ricotta mixture, 1/3 of the meat sauce, and 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese.
  8. Repeat layers twice more, finishing with a layer of mozzarella cheese.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  11. Let lasagna rest for 10 minutes before serving.
