Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 carrots, peeled and diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 cup red wine
- 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, carrots, and celery, and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Add the ground beef and pork to the pot, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in the red wine and let it reduce for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer, uncovered, for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- After 45 minutes, stir in the milk and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes.
- Remove the bay leaf and discard. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese.
- Serve the Bolognese sauce over cooked pasta of your choice, and garnish with additional Parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.
