The first time I tasted this Bolognese was at my grandmother's house, and I knew I had to learn how to make it myself. Over the years, I've tweaked the recipe slightly, but the essence remains the same: a rich, hearty sauce that brings people together around the table.

Whether you're cooking for a special occasion or just a cozy night in, this Bolognese is sure to impress your guests and leave them craving more.

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, carrots, and celery, and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Add the ground beef and pork to the pot, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 10 minutes.
  4. Stir in the red wine and let it reduce for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaf. Stir well to combine.
  6. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer, uncovered, for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. After 45 minutes, stir in the milk and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes.
  8. Remove the bay leaf and discard. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese.
  9. Serve the Bolognese sauce over cooked pasta of your choice, and garnish with additional Parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.
