The origins of Chicken Parmesan can be traced back to Italy, where similar dishes like Eggplant Parmigiana were popular. When Italian immigrants brought their culinary traditions to America, they adapted the recipe using chicken, which was more readily available.

This Chicken Parmesan recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions. It's a versatile dish that pairs well with pasta, salad, or crusty bread, making it a favorite in many households.

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound to an even thickness using a meat mallet or rolling pin.
  3. Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
  4. Dredge each chicken breast in flour, shaking off excess, then dip in egg, and finally coat with breadcrumb mixture, pressing firmly to adhere.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken breasts until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  6. Spread 1 cup of marinara sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Place chicken breasts on top of sauce, then spoon remaining sauce over chicken.
  7. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over chicken breasts.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving.
